Callout

Use a callout to provide supporting information that users should be aware of.

Writing callouts

Callouts should briefly summarise relevant information.

Follow these rules:

  • Use sentence case
  • 80 characters or less for headings
  • 1–2 sentences of text
  • Clear headings – ‘Pensions are invested’ is better than ‘Important’
  • Don’t use buttons, bullets, paragraphs or text hyperlinks

Example:

Important

A pension is an investment. That means its value can go up or down and could be worth less than was paid in.

✅

Pensions are invested

The value can go up or down and could be worth less than was paid in.

Vague heading
So users have to read the body text.

Clear heading
This makes the callout shorter and more glanceable.
